Dr. Hedi van der Watt
MBChB DCH FCP
Fluent in English, Afrikaans and German.
I joined Dr Wewege & Associates in June 2004 and have been an associate for the last 16 years.
Copperfield is the oldest and most established paediatric practice in the Southern Suburbs.
I was actively involved in Oncology and Haematology under the late Prof Peter Jacobs and assisted in the care of children undergoing chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants mainly for leukaemia and lymphoma. Recently I was co-author of a paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine (1999) on gene transplant therapy for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
I have a special interest taking care of preterm infants and newborns, mainly operating from Kingsbury Life Care and occasionally Constantiaberg Mediclinic.
My smallest surviving newborn to date is 390 gram (Hope Samuels) and the youngest surviving gestation 23 weeks( Maravilha Poilicarpo).
Since 2019 Dr Ricky Dippenaar, a specialist neonatologist, was asked to join our Neonatal Unit in co-managing the higher risk neonates. This way we can provide the best possible care for the higher risk or complicated neonate.
The scope of my practice is not limited to neonatology alone. A significant part of my practice is general paediatrics, ranging from paediatric dermatology, childhood asthma, feeding related difficulties, learning difficulties and adolescent health.
Affiliated to our Claremont Practice is a well baby clinic, managed by Sr Penny Barnard.
I have joined Operation Smile (NGO) in 2015 and have been involved in a number of missions (South Africa, Philippines, China) correcting cleft lips and palates in disadvantaged communities.
My spare time is spent with my two wonderful teenage children. We enjoy the outdoors. I love trail running and am passionate about my garden.
