Dr. Jonathan Buckley
BSc, MBChB, DCH, FC Paed SA, Cert Paed Nephrology
Paediatrician and Paediatric Nephrologist
I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in 1995, followed by an MBChB degree in 2001, both at UCT.
I completed my internship at Chris Hani Baragwanth Hospital. Thereafter I moved to rural northern KZN, for my Community Service year.
Following this, I spent some time working in the United Kingdom. I returned to Cape Town in 2007 to realize my dream of becoming a paediatrician.
I trained at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, where I had been a chronic patient as a child. I joined the College of Paediatricians in 2011 and completed my training in 2012.
I spent six months in 2012 working in paediatric rheumatology clinics at both Red Cross Children’s Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital, gaining valuable experience in this speciality.
From July 2012 to July 2014, I completed a two-year fellowship in Paediatric Nephrology (kidney diseases), in the Kidney/Renal Unit at Red Cross Children’s Hospital. I obtained my Certificate in Paediatric Nephrology in 2014. My special interests are nephrotic syndrome, bladder infections and “wetting” problems.
I joined Dr Wewege and Associates (Copperfield Childcare) in 2015. Although I have a subspeciality qualification, I retain a strong interest in general paediatrics and care of the newborn. I continue to maintain a close relationship with the Kidney Unit at Red Cross Children’s Hospital where I am a part-time consultant and a senior honorary lecturer being active in the teaching and training of medical students and paediatricians of tomorrow.
I am married to a wonderful woman, Taryn. We have a son, William and a daughter, Anna. Outside of medicine, my interests are mountain biking, hiking and travelling.
Having been a chronic patient as a child, I am well placed to understand the stress illness places on both child and parents
