Well Baby Birth
We look forward to meeting you and your new baby. Remember you may request one of us to be the Paediatrician attending your baby in hospital.
Your paediatrician will examine your newborn within the first 24 hours of life. In the event of a caesarean section we will be present at the time of delivery in theatre.
Initial Post-Delivery Assessment and Examination includes the Apgar score (this score is used to monitor successful transition to extra-uterine life beginning from the moment of birth). It also includes a series of measurements, including weight, length, and head circumference.
Is my baby healthy?
This is usually the first and most important question parents ask after delivery. To answer that question accurately requires careful observation, thorough examination and, if needed, onwards referral for further assessment.
The aim of both the initial examination at birth and the full neonatal examination within the first 72 hours of life is to:
- Screen for abnormalities
- Make referrals for further tests or treatment if needed
- Provide reassurance to the parents
We will visit your baby every morning during your stay in hospital.
Doctors also offer screening tests to detect problems they cannot see during the physical examination.
- GUTHRIE test for inborn errors of metabolism http//babysfirsttest.org
- Hearing Screening
- Pulse oximetry to determine heart abnormalities
We aim to encourage parent-baby bonding as far as possible, if both mother and baby are well. Both Kingsbury hospital and Constantiaberg Mediclinic are hospitals who follow the Baby Friendly Initiative.
Breast feeding will be initiated as soon as possible after delivery.
After discharge from hospital we encourage:
- One week weight check to ensure adequate feeding
- Six-week follow up, as some conditions can develop or become apparent later.
Once you have established a relationship with your Paediatrician further routine well baby and child visits will be discussed and the role this plays in monitoring and tracking your child’s growth and development.
